Gold and Silver Fever

The men in my family are fans of those reality TV shows that chronicle a group of men spending thousands upon thousands of dollars digging for gold. I have to say that every once in a while I sit down and watch these shows with them. While I find the idea of digging for gold in these freezing cold climates insane, I have to admit that some of the men are true characters and I find their stories intriguing.

However, as I sit and offer my point of view calling these men crazy, in actuality this dream of moving heaven and earth to find gold is not a new concept. People have been digging, hoping and dreaming of finding their own pot of gold for centuries.

Recently I came across this interesting graphic that breaks down how people have digging for gold and silver, too, over thousands of years.

Presented By GreatSouthernCoins.com visit greatsoutherncoins.com

In reading the facts listed in this graphic I learned some interesting information:

-- I didn't realize that at one point silver was considered more valuable than gold.
-- While I did know that some of our country's most prosperous cities grew out of the gold rush I didn't realize how quickly they grew. At the start of the gold rush San Fransico had only 200 permanent citizens. However, in only six years that number grew to 36,000! Now that remarkable!
-- Silver is making a big comeback. I did know about this fact. I have a friend who, a few months back, needed cash rather quickly. She took some old silverware that she had wrapped up in her attic to the local jeweler. Thinking she only had a couple hundred dollars worth of silver she quickly learned that in reality she had over $1200.00! Now that's pretty cool and a nice surprise!

I found this infographic interesting and I'm sure if you take some time to read it you'll learn some new facts, too!

Interesting Rock Festival Statistics

Have you ever attended a rock festival? I've never been to one but I've heard about them my entire life. Who, like me at the ripe old age of 47, hasn't heard of 'Woodstock'?? I'm the youngest of 5 kids so this infamous rock festival was something I learned about years ago.

Then several years ago I was a fan of the hit TV show on MTV 'The Ozbournes'. Watching that I learned about 'Ozzfest' which is a music festival for heavy metal fans.

Here's a very interesting graphic detailing the statistics and demographics of rock festivals.

Music Festivals Infographic
Infographic Provided by EquipSupply

I have to say that I can't help but scratch my head and wonder why people go to these events. They're obviously for the young...or at least the young at heart! I know I'm getting old, but have no desire to go and plant myself in a sea of strangers! Talk about claustrophobia and germophobia! I'd be freaking out in a matter of minutes!

And also in reading this graphic I'm flabbergasted at the ticket prices! If I wasn't panicking about the millions of people and germs surrounding me I'd certainly be freaking out over the cost just to walk through the gates! And I can't imagine the cost of any food or drinks once you get inside. The companies that provide the event supplies and concession machines must salivate at the idea of being part of these festivals. I'm sure they rake in the bucks at such events!

I don't want to be a downer. I was young once and went to concerts all the time. These festivals are similar to concerts...they just last longer...days longer. I'm sure those who attend these events have a great time and have lots of fun. But I think in my old age I've become too prudent and uptight! Rock festivals aren't created for an old and frugal mama like me!

Regardless if you'd ever attend any kind of rock festival I did find the graphic very informative!

Okay...more fun and interesting information coming soon...until then,

Poconos Family Resorts

For those of you who may not be familiar with Pennsylvania let me tell you that our state is rich in culture and filled with surprises. We have big cities, such as Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, but we also have a variety of quaint small towns tucked all over the state. We have beautiful mountain areas, lush forests, sandy beaches along Lake Erie as well as historic battlefields in Gettysburg.

But one place in PA that is well known to many is the Pocono Mountain area. Nestled in the northeastern corner of Pennsylvania the Pocono Mountains have always had a great reputation for skiing. And, as I recall, it was considered a beautiful and secluded spot for honeymooners. ;D

Meanwhile, as I spent the past several years of my life in my own little world on the opposite end of the state, the Pocono area grew--greatly. Much more so than I ever realized. A family friend spent most of her summer as a nurse at children's camp in the Pocono region. It was through her that I learned how this area has changed and grown. The Poconos area now offers a large variety of family attractions as well skiing. I was completely surprised at how much there is to do!

And if you've ever tossed the idea of a little family get-away to the Northeast then you must consider the Great Wolf Lodge as it is one of the leading Poconos family resorts. The Great Wolf has a fabulous water park which was designed with every age in mind...from very small children to teens to grandparents! My kids would love it!

Beyond the water park the Great Wolf also offers great dining options plus some great retail therapy--Shopping! (My favorite!) They also have a spa for adults and even a spa for kids. How cool is that?? My daughter would be in heaven! Then for the health conscious visitors they also have a fitness center. You can work off those extra calories that you take in at their fine restaurants.

Plus the entire Poconos area has a variety of other attractions. As I mentioned earlier they offer skiing, as well as snow boarding and snow tubing in the winter. Then in the warmer months you can take in the incredible natural beauty of eight different waterfalls in the area. You can go canoeing, kayaking, biking and horseback riding. And for the golf enthusiasts they also have gorgeous golf courses! There is also a wild animal park nearby which is fun for every age. Or if you love history, you can visit a living history farm. Plus they have a local theatre which presents some very popular shows. Goodness! There is so much to do and the options never end!

Okay, I need to close for now. But I have to say that sharing all of this information has seriously got me yearning for a vacation! I need to talk to my husband about planning a trip to one of the top Poconos family resorts this winter! We have a little time off after the holiday season so maybe...just maybe...we can plan a get-away!

Okay...more interesting topics in store...until then,

Girls Pajamas from Aeropostal

I'm spending a little bit of my free time this evening reving myself up for all the holiday shopping that has to be done soon. My daughter's birthday is right before Christmas so I not only have to do lots of holiday shopping for the entire family, but I also have to get birthday gifts for her at the same time.

But thankfully she's a girl!! Which translates to...she is SUPER EASY to shop for!

Not that she really *NEEDS* a thing...we just went school shopping a few weeks ago! But I will admit that her pajamas are looking pretty worn. I don't think I've gotten her any since last Christmas. All summer she only slept in t-shirts and shorts.

Meanwhile, as I was doing some online shopping I happened upon these darling girls pajamas and I think the styles are right up her alley. They have colorful tanks, camis and t-shirts which are perfect for her. She is so unlike me and she wears tank tops in the winter! Me? I wear heavy fleece pajamas because I am always freezing cold.

And the flannel pants or the fleece pants would be great to go with these tops. And I've taken a fancy to the holiday themed pants! How cute are they?!?! But knowing my daughter she'd probably prefer the plain colored pants. Usually if I like something it ends up that she doesn't. It's that teen attitude that comes into play when we shop. But then again, the little flannel dorm boxers might be more in line with her taste. Plus...as I said...she's never cold like me!

   Decisions! Decisions!

Okay...I'm going to get going so I can focus and take more time to look over this large selection of girls pajamas and maybe even more of the other clothes on their site. I bought my son a couple pair of jeans from Aeropostal last year and he wears them all the time. And the best part...the price was great! Lots to think about!

Have a great evening! More fun on the way tomorrow...until then,

'The Shack'

I started reading 'The Shack' by William P. Young a few days ago. I'm a bit late in the game and I'm sure many of you have already read it. But my life's been so crazy the last few years and having time to relax and read is, at times, nearly impossible.

But so far I like this book and I 'get' it.

Here's a quote that I bookmarked so I could share it...

"Honey, there's no easy answer that will take your pain away. Believe me, if I had one, I'd use it now. I have no magic wand to wave over you and make it all better. Life takes a bit of time and a lot of relationship."

I'm sure everyone on this planet has wished for...at least once in his or her life...magic powers or a magic wand that would quickly take their pain away.

I have a few more things to share from this book, but not enough time today...busy, busy, busy!

More on the way...until then,

Correction on my last post!!

Okay....I don't know where my head was or what the heck was going on with me that day...perhaps I was reading too fast due to excitement??? Hmmmm...maybe! BUT...

In my last post titled Enter to win a beautiful bangle bracelet!! I had a few things wrong...the drawing is for ANY piece of jewelry in her shop not just her bangles. AND the piece you win will be made especially for you. Simply look through her listings and tell her which piece is your favorite and she'll make another like it or similar to it in your favorite color.

So to clarify EVERYTHING I'll list the details for the drawing again along with the necessary corrections:

Sign up to follow Zasra's blog.
Leave a comment as to your favorite color, any favorite "catch phrase" or inspirational words.
Then tell her your favorite piece of jewelry from her Etsy shop, Zasra.
Then you'll be entered into the drawing with the chance to win a piece of her jewelry made especially for you.
And if you share the contest with a friend and they sign up she'll enter you again.

WHEW!! Hope I got it right this time!

Geez...I know I'm getting old, but goodness...I'm not that old! I'll just blame my confusion on my overwhelmingly busy life! (Yeah, right! LOL!)

I'm sure I'll have more good stuff to share soon...until then,

And here's my favorite item in her shop:

VALENTINE - Coeur Bleu sur Blanc (Original Blue Heart Oil Painting/Medium Size/)

Simply beautiful! And I also want to make sure you know her personal story...

Words are hard to find to explain the different emotions surrounding Haiti, my family, me... So much we would like to do, yet all that seems to be doable right now is to give money to charities. I have two families in Port-au-Prince. One is fine, but they lost their house. The second, no news up to now. I want to help everyone in my family the best I can. This is why I decided that I will give 100% of the profits that I make on Etsy in the next few months, to my family back in Haiti.
By profits I mean that I will reimburse myself the shipping and keep $5 per items to buy new stuff and continue on creating. All the rest will be put aside to eventually help my family (eventually because right now with the roads and buildings destroyed, it makes it hard to even transfer them money directly).

Thank you to everyone who is participating in any way in helping Haiti and giving this country some hope back.

Namaste

UPDATE: Second family is safe. They also lost their house though and this makes me even more committed to give all of my Etsy profits, for the entire year of 2010, to both of my affected families. Thank you for shopping at Simply Naif!

Please take a look at her beautiful artwork and do whatever you can to support her efforts for her loved ones in Haiti.

More love to share tomorrow...until then,

Jewelry by Nala

Time to share the inspiration of another fellow artist and blogger from the Handmade Artist's Forum.

This week's featured blogger/artist from the Handmade Artist's Forum Blog Ring is:

Jewelry by Nala
http://jewelrybynala.blogspot.com/

On her blog Nancy says, "The creative side of my brain is definitely dominant, and my math skills back me up on that! I'm just a natural born crafter. Jewelry making is not my first venture into the world of crafting, but it is definitely my favorite."

Once you take a peek at her beautiful creations it's obvious that she loves what she does! Here are some of my favorites:

Bloom Where You Are Planted Pendant Necklace

Winter Whispers Swarovski and Silver Bracelet

Crystal Ice Swarovski Elements Earrings

So beautiful!! I LOVE the Crystal Ice Earrings the most!

These items are all for sale at her Etsy shop, Jewelrybynala. Take a stroll over there to see more of her unique, handmade jewelry! Her creations feature a variety of sterling silver, Czech glass, Crystallized Swarovski Elements, semiprecious stones, freshwater pearls and other fine jewelry materials.

If you see something you like let her know. She's also known to "tweak" existing pieces in her collection into custom ordered designs. Simply ask and she'll work to come up with a special creation just for you!

And please don't forget to stop by her blog, too!

I'll be sharing more good stuff soon...until then,

Melanie Lynn Designs

Earlier this morning I posted my 'HAFTeam Spread the Love' featured shop and choice for today, Sat., Jan. 23, 2010.

When you visit her Etsy shop you'll see that Melanie Lynn only has (2) items listed for sale...which I mentioned in my post. Well, it turns out there's a reason for that...

...a few moments ago I heard from Melanie Lynn. She explained that the reason they removed most of their listings and only have (2) items left is because they recently opened a new online store:

www.melanielynndesign.com

Oh my goodness!! Even though it's not an Etsy shop I'll still 'spread the love'! Take a look at these:

Green MultiChain Necklace

Tiny Green Circles Earrings

Simply fabulous! Click those links and get your fannies over there and see all of the beautiful designs!

I'd like to wish Melanie Lynn and her team all the very best with their new online shop! With such beautiful items I don't think it will be hard to find success!

Okay...more goodies on the way!

This looks interesting...

...and I might just check it out.

The Happiness Project

I'm not even sure what it entails, but at the very least they have some awesome quotes listed on the left side. Here's a good one I found there:

"Whoever is happy will make others happy, too."
~ Mark Twain

I'll be sharing more soon,

Wednesday, January 06, 2010

Remember this...

...as you move forward through the new year...

"Your Choice = Your Results"

Just read that on Twitter and loved it. I see so many people all around me who are not happy where they are in life. What they don't seem to understand is that they are choosing to be right where they are.

If you aren't happy then YOU need to be the one to make things better. No one is going to come along and fix things for you.

YOU and only YOU are the answer to making your life better.

Okay...I'm juming down off my soapbox now...getting ready to post some of my own work from the past year.

Until then,
